Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev clinched the Madrid Masters title after defeating Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final with a scoreline of 2-1 in sets (4-6, 7-5, 7-5).
Rublev, after a comeback and nearly three hours of play, secured his second Masters title, and his first in the Spanish capital.
Moreover, he became the first player to win Madrid in both singles and doubles, as he lifted the trophy last year alongside compatriot Karen Khachanov.
For the 26-year-old Rublev, this marked his 25th final appearance in an ATP tournament, and his fifth in the Masters 1000 series. He has previously won 16 titles, including two Masters, including last year’s in Monte Carlo.
Earlier this year, he claimed victory in one tournament, in Hong Kong.
By capturing the Madrid title, Rublev has moved up two spots in the ATP rankings and will be ranked sixth in the world come Monday. On the other hand, Auger-Aliassime’s finals appearance propelled him from 35th to 20th place.
