Washington (AFP) – Canada midfielder Tajon Buchanan was taken to a Dallas-area hospital on Tuesday after suffering a lower leg injury in training for the team’s Copa America quarter-final against Venezuela.
Buchanan, who plays for Italy’s Inter Milan, was taken off in an ambulance and the workout was called off as the 25-year-old’s injury was evaluated and treated, according to Canada Soccer.
Canada had never before advanced out of the group stage in the Copa America, the South American championship tournament. The 2026 World Cup host nations Canada, Mexico and the United States are among those entered as guests, the event being staged in US venues.
Buchanan has scored four goals in 41 matches for the Canadian national team.
Canada finished second in Group A with a 1-1-1 record, losing 2-0 to Argentina but beating Peru 1-0 and playing Chile to a 0-0 draw to book a last-eight date against Venezuela at Arlington, Texas later this week.
