The Court of Appeal in Versailles has decided to halt the auction of the stolen Ballon d’Or that legendary Argentine footballer Diego Armando Maradona won in 1986.
The court accepted the appeal from Maradona’s daughters, who claim that the Ballon d’Or is the property of the deceased footballer’s family and cannot be sold at auction. Maradona earned the Ballon d’Or as the best player of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where he led Argentina to the title of world champions.
Almost all of his matches in that tournament were legendary, especially the game against England where he scored one goal with the “Hand of God” and another after dribbling past numerous English players.
FOR SALE ON JUNE 6
Maradona’s Ballon d’Or, stolen over 30 years ago, has resurfaced at an auction in Paris.
To recall, Maradona passed away in 2020, and his heirs state that the Ballon d’Or was stolen and claim that the current owner has no right to sell it.
There have been various speculations surrounding the trophy, including claims that Maradona lost it in a poker game or sold it to pay off debts.
There was also talk that Maradona kept it in a bank in Naples, which was robbed by local criminals in 1989 while he was playing for Napoli. His heirs believe that the trophy was stolen from the bank.
