The Serbian Olympic Committee has confirmed that 37-year-old tennis player Novak Djokovic will be among the Serbian athletes competing at the Paris Olympic Games. For the most successful tennis player of all time, who has participated in every Olympic tournament since 2008, this will be his fifth attempt to win an Olympic gold medal.
Djokovic won a bronze medal in Beijing 2008, where he made his Olympic debut, but in his remaining three appearances, he did not reach the finals and lost twice in the bronze medal matches. Three years ago in Tokyo, he lost the semifinal to Alexander Zverev, who went on to become the Olympic champion, and then lost the bronze medal match to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.
The tennis tournament will be held from July 27 to August 4. In Rio de Janeiro, Djokovic was defeated in the first round by Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, who had beaten him four years earlier on Wimbledon’s grass courts in the bronze medal match at the London Olympics. In April, Djokovic prioritized the Paris Olympics, as the Olympic gold is the only major trophy missing from his illustrious career.
The tennis tournament at the Paris Games will be played on the clay courts of Roland Garros from July 27 to August 4, with Rafael Nadal of Spain and Britain’s Andy Murray, both of whom have twice stopped Djokovic in Olympic semifinals (in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London), also announcing their participation.
Alongside Djokovic, Serbia will also be represented at the Paris Olympic tournament by Dušan Lajović, who is ranked 56th on the ATP list.
