Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling, American Gable Steveson, has decided to try his hand at another sport and has signed a contract with the Buffalo Bills, the NFL team announced. Steveson won the gold medal in the super heavyweight category at the Tokyo Olympics at the age of 21 years, two months, and six days, making him the youngest Olympic champion in that weight class in freestyle wrestling.
He has signed a contract with Buffalo’s practice squad and will attempt to earn a spot on the defensive line. “I was fortunate to compete at the highest level in my sport, but I look forward to the challenge of seeing how my wrestling skills can translate to American football,” Steveson told ESPN, having never played American football before.
He was one of the most dominant collegiate wrestlers in the United States. Before joining the Bills, Steveson had a contract with wrestling promoters WWE, but he was released last month after just one match that did not generate significant interest among television viewers. Steveson is 185 cm tall and weighs around 120 kg.
