The Mercedes driver George Russell was stripped of his victory at the Belgian Grand Prix after his car was found to be 1.5 kilograms under the allowed weight during the post-race weighing after the 14th race of the season.
With his disqualification, the victory went to Lewis Hamilton, marking his 105th career win. Russell drove the race of his career, but due to breaking the rule that mandates a minimum weight of 796.5 kilograms, he was deprived of his second victory of the season and the third overall in his career.
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri was moved up to second place, while Charles Leclerc of Ferrari inherited the podium spot. The current champion and leader in the overall standings, Max Verstappen, was classified fourth.
Russell put on a spectacle in Belgium, “breaking” Hamilton’s dominance in the Mercedes team.
Before the summer break, Verstappen leads the overall standings with 275 points, followed by Lando Norris with 197.
The next race of this year’s Formula 1 championship is the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled from August 23 to 25.
