Washington (AFP) – Thursday’s scheduled opening round of the PGA Tour Wyndham Championship has been postponed by a day because of heavy rains from a tropical storm, organizers announced. All tournament facilities at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, remained closed due to Tropical Storm Debby.
Heavy rain and gusty winds were predicted all day Thursday in the area, with rainfall totals reaching four to six inches (10 cm to 15 cm) by the end of the day. A flash flood warning remained in effect for the region. The course received two inches of rain in about five hours in the early morning, with sustained winds of 15-25 mph gusting to 40 mph.
The National Weather Service called conditions “dangerous and life-threatening” with organizers closing Thursday play to fans late Wednesday before the postponement. “Everyone’s safety is our top priority,” tournament director Bobby Powell said. “Looks like the storm could clear our area sometime Friday.”
The PGA Tour season concludes with this week’s event, with the top 70 players on season points advancing to the playoffs, which begin next week.
