New York (AFP) – The United States women’s national team, set to compete for a fifth gold medal at the Paris Olympics, will play a tuneup match against Mexico on July 13, US Soccer announced Friday.
The Americans will play Mexico at Harrison, New Jersey, in suburban New York at Red Bull Arena, home venue of Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls and National Women’s Soccer League champion Gotham FC.
It is set to be the third match for new US women’s coach Emma Stone, who is currently in charge of Chelsea, and the penultimate match before the US women depart for the Paris Olympics.
Mexico and the United States have made a joint bid for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which FIFA will award in May, so the match could be the first meeting between the two host nations of the next Women’s World Cup.
The Americans suffered only their second-ever loss to Mexico 2-0 during group play in the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, which the US squad went on to win.
US Soccer will pay tribute to the 1999 Women’s World Cup team at the match with a reunion on the 25th anniversary of its championship run on home soil.
